Vico Vicaria n°20
Castel Capuano is the oldest castle in Napoles.
Of Norman origin it wasbuilt in the times of William I,
known as the Bad King in 1165.
It was the royal residence of the “Angioini” and
the “Aragonesi”. In the following centuries it underwent
many alterations and restorations until the XVI century,
when Pedro de Toledo wanted it to become Low Courts and Prison. Placed at the mounth of the present-day “Via dei Tribunali”, it is the seat of the civil division of the Neapolitan Low Court nowdays too. It takes its name from the nearby “Porta Capuana” that in ancient times was one of the four access gates of the town and it is called this way being set towards Capua Town.
